ABSTRACT:
Parkinson' s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that predominantly affects individuals over 60 years of age and is one of the most common neurological conditions globally. This study aimed to analyze hospital morbidity associated with PD in the Northeast region of Brazil between 2014 and 2024. Data were obtained through DATASUS and compared with the IBGE demographic census. A total of 1,697 hospitalizations were recorded, with Pernambuco and Bahia leading the number of cases, reflecting the correlation between population density and prevalence of the disease. The most affected age group was 60 to 79 years old, and there was a predominance of males and individuals who declared themselves to be brown. An increase in hospitalizations was observed until 2015, followed by a decrease during the COVID-19 pandemic and a gradual recovery in subsequent years. The study also identified 104 deaths related to PD, 51 of which in Bahia. The data suggest the need for public health strategies focused on early diagnosis, multidisciplinary treatment and adapted policies to manage the increasing prevalence and improve the quality of life of patients with PD.
