ABSTRACT:
Depression in the elderly presents high morbidity and mortality and atypical manifestations, making diagnosis and treatment difficult. This study reviewed the literature to identify the prevalence of depressive symptoms in the elderly in Brazil. Eight articles were analyzed from the following sources: Scientific Electronic Library Online and the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences via the Virtual Health Library. The findings indicate a high prevalence of the condition, associated with factors such as advanced age, female gender, low education, social isolation and comorbidities. Vulnerable groups, such as elderly quilombolas, institutionalized and rural residents, face greater difficulties in accessing health services. Primary care plays a crucial role in diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the need for public policies that integrate mental health, social support and financial inclusion. Preventive measures, professional training and expansion of specialized services are essential for healthy aging.
